Sustainext Project and its coordinator Natac joined the World Bioproduct Day with a post on LinkedIn. This day was launched in 2021 to be held annually on 7 July with the purpose of raising awareness via social media campaign of the importance of bioproducts around us and how they contribute to the larger goal of environmental sustainability and climate action.

It is key for the European industry to recognise the importance of the role of bio-based products in superseding non-renewable options. Through the adoption of more bio-based materials we can move towards solutions that are more sustainable and healthier for us and the planet by stepping away from fossil fuel feedstocks.

And that is one of SustaiNext’s goals and biggest challenges: to valorise agro-industrial biomass feedstock, in order to obtain new healthy ingredients by using currently under-exploited raw materials with great potential.

Therefore, SustaiNext will be deployed industrially with six European feedstocks of sustainable and local origin. Three medicinal and aromatic crops (rosemary, camomile and lemon verbena) will be grown in Extremadura in disused tobacco fields as an alternative towards healthier crops, and also between solar panels, enhancing land use. In addition, three agro-industrial side-streams (olive, artichoke/thistle and pomegranate) will show how biomass recycling represents an opportunity to give new life to certain under-exploited biological raw materials
