The Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) has highlighted SustaiNext as a project showing how bio-based innovation can create new opportunities in Europe’s rural areas.
In a recent article on the role of innovation in Europe’s agricultural future, CBE JU features SustaiNext as an example of creating value in rural regions, highlighting the transformation of a former tobacco processing plant in Extremadura into the project’s multiproduct biorefinery.
The flagship facility in Hervás is designed to process medicinal and aromatic plants and agricultural side streams to produce high-value botanical extracts and functional ingredients. The project also works closely with primary producers, connecting local agricultural resources with new bio-based value chains.
SustaiNext is one of several CBE JU-funded projects featured in the article, which looks at how bio-based innovation can support farmers, create new uses for local resources and strengthen rural economies across Europe.
