SustaiNext will scale up and validate a first-of-its-kind industrial facility based on the integration of the whole supply chain – from feedstock providers to product’s end-users – applying a disruptive circular model integrated in a dynamic biorefinery to achieve the complete valorisation of sustainably sourced feedstocks with a zero-waste and zero-emissions ambition, to deliver plant-based healthy extracts and functional ingredients while transforming a rural region with an outdated cropping system into a cutting edge bio-based circular referent.

It will be deployed industrially by using six European feedstocks of sustainable and local origin. Three medicinal and aromatic crops (rosemary, camomile and lemon verbena) will be grown in Extremadura in disused tobacco fields as an alternative towards healthier crops. In addition, three agro-industrial side-streams (olive, artichoke/cardoon and pomegranate) will show how biomass recycling represents an opportunity to give new life to certain under-exploited biological raw materials.

SustaiNext will use these feedstocks to develop 12 valorisation routes to yield 46 plant-based healthy extracts and functional ingredients out of which 13 are totally new in the market and 12 are newly produced in Europe for 6 industries: food, feed, nutraceuticals, cosmetics, chemical performance, and biobased fertilizers.
